Mostly, the people who receive the books and let me in on their feelings about it, where they read it, how it affected their week and so on. But also many of my friends who told me to keep going when something difficult made it seem like it was impossible to continue. Fernanda was one of these friends, always introducing me to people as ‘Gemma with the c project’. Fernanda and I have similar taste in literature, and I have spent the last 4 days at her family home in Hermosillo, Mexico, where her childhood bedroom’s bookcase is almost the same as mine (although in four languages as Fernanda is fluent in Spanish, English, French and Italian). I felt this was the most beautiful thing, people all over the world finding and loving the same books and enrichening their minds in the same way. This is what we hope to do with sendb00ks, allow anybody with a phone, postbox and appetite for information to have the greatest education possible via literature.

Fernanda also helped me develop a way of running the project from wherever Charles and I go on our trip, giving me a reading list of Latin American writers. We considered Octavio Paz, who was problematic for the artists I approached, Malcolm Lowry, Antonin Artaud, Rosario Castellanos (I will post soon a short story by her I loved very much) also very exciting contemporary writers working on the borderlands like Valeria Luiselli, but in so many cases there were problems with the rights or distribution. A brilliant artist Lucia Vidales recommended that we send a book about the conquest of the Aztecs, The Broken Spear by Miguel Leon Portilla, a great poem about the origins of Mexican nationality and the defence of a culture and civilisation before the Spanish conquest. We at Sendb00ks urge you to source these books, study and love them, while we work to make more relationships with different publishers who can help us send them at a later date. Carson explores a host of misfits and outcasts as they attempt to come to terms with their world and grapple with how to become useful members of society by looking for, and struggling to find, human love wherever they can get it.

Sendb00ks February 2021 (Archive).

In February 2021 Michella Bredahl chose Virginia Woolf's A Room of Ones Own. We created a sleeve for the book with Michellas' Artwork.

Click here to get to Michella Bredahl's Instagram.

Welcome to February at Sendb00ks! She creates beautiful organic sculptures with her hands, inspired by the abundance of nature that surrounds her at her beautiful studio in Teia, just outside Barcelona. Earlier this month we visited her here, just in time to see all the trees start to bloom, surrounded by rolling farmlands and a view of the sea where Berta took us through a few of her favourite books. The one that spoke to us the most and that we have chosen to send to you all this month is by the Japanese art critic and philosopher Yanagi Sōetsu. It is a book that explores the beauty of functional objects and the importance of tradition and work created without ownership and ego. This month, by blending the work of Berta and the writings of Yanagi, we hope we can remind each other of the importance in reconnecting with ourselves through our sense of touch, the creative potential we can realise when we display patience, and the power of repetition: “It is that repetition that frees my hands from thought. And that freedom is the mother of all creation.” Details to sign up for this months package are now on our website, not one to miss out on, it will be full of postcards, interviews, and a little springtime surprise. ❤️

Sendb00ks May 2021 (Archive).

Stephanie LaCava chose Violette Leduc's Thérèse And Isabelle. The walls of white rooms were hung with green tapestries, spirals. A big window on the outside was filled with green trees. Weavings, pulled downwards, extended the thread. Marie approached me to tell me that she had been following Sendb00ks for a while and, excitedly, we started to talk about the books that inspire her.

A student of Central Saint Martins in London, where she learned to weave, Marie bought her first loom after launching a crowd-funding campaign. She explains in an interview with Sotheby’s that weaving is an intense manual work that requires hours of concentration—it is a quasi-mediative art sometimes weaving the words of writers like Duras, Barthes, Chantal Akerman, Etel Adnan, and Bouvier into her spirals. She is passionate about artists like Louise Bourgeois and Marina Abramovic, listening to the radio or podcasts while weaving. Marie describes her practice as a necessary process of storytelling. Or, in her own words, “I weave the invisible threads of an intimate story that does not know how to say otherwise.”

Marie is now working on an upcoming exhibition in NYC, opening on the first of June, which will be about her travel throughout Mexico and Brazil. Entitled L’air sous mes pieds, “it is the idea of lightness, movement, air, changes.”

It is the day before I return to Mexico, and at the airport, we start to talk about making a sleeve in time for her NYC exhibition. Marie suggests The Lover, by Marguerite Duras. A mesmerising semi-autobiographical novel that won the Prix Goncourt. Presenting us with a rare and exceptional opportunity to witness fairness, beauty assists us in our attention to justice. The beautiful object renders fairness, an abstract concept, concrete by making it directly available to our sensory perceptions. With its direct appeal to the senses, beauty stops us, transfixes us, fills us with a “surfeit of aliveness.” In so doing, it takes the individual away from the center of his or her self-preoccupation and thus prompts a distribution of attention outward toward others and, ultimately, she contends, toward ethical fairness.

Details

Author: Elaine Scarry
Format: Paperback / softback 144 pages
ISBN: 9780691089591

About

Okonkwo is the greatest warrior alive, famous throughout West Africa. Lennox is unafraid to paint and excavate ancestral tales, unearthing horror chests which may have been hidden, those which cross psychological and physical boundaries to expose internal depths. Through her use of natural openings, volcanos, shells, and here masks, these guises for transformation also become portals for traversing and collapsing the borders between reality and fantasy, the beautiful and grotesque, dissolving into something much more enchanting.

The Book

The first story in the Silver Press collection follows a young debutante who does not want to go to the ball.
