While writing To the Lighthouse, Virginia Woolf prepared an essay called 'How Should One Read a Book?' where she conceives of writing as "some event that has left a distinct impression on you", when "a whole vision, an entire conception, seemed contained in that moment." This is exactly what Woolf succeeds at doing in To the Lighthouse. One of the most important works of modernism, this novel starts off with Mrs.Ramsay's promise to her son that they will visit the lighthouse on the following day. Typical of Woolf's style, the novel continually shifts the perspective of her characters, toying with perception and dialogue.
