We have since devoured the book and have fallen in love with its characters from their small town in The Deep South in the 1930s, the loneliness they all struggle with and their search for love. This Christmas more than ever we understand many of you will be separated from your loved ones or experiencing the festive period in circumstances far from what you imagined. Carson McCullers was no stranger to isolation and the vulnerability of her characters and their resilience and strength portrayed in this book gave us a much needed reminder of the importance of connection. Carson explores a host of misfits and outcasts as they attempt to come to terms with their world and grapple with how to become useful members of society by looking for, and struggling to find, human love wherever they can get it.

Sendb00ks January 2021 (Archive).

In January 2021 Clem Macleod chose Anne Carsons' Autobiography Of Red. While she refutes any overly personal interpretations of her writing their poetic and comedic style give parts of her writing an intimate and almost confessional tone while remaining untainted and uninfluenced by any context of the writer.

She currently teaches in America and specialises in Ancient Greek mythology, the stories from which serve as the main inspiration for most of her books. Autobiogpraphy of Red blends classical literature with modern tropes. Loosely based on the myth of Geryon and the Tenth Labor of Herakles, Carson metaphorically reimagines the Greek monster Geryon as a moody, artsy, gay teenage boy navigating the difficulties of sex and love and identity to create this distinctively original work that is unparalleled by any other writer.

-Katie

Carson is famously enigmatic and private, which I think is so admirable at a time where you can literally send authors instagram messages and see what they're eating for breakfast (not that I don't absolutely love seeing the contents of Eileen Myles' bedside table). But I love this quote from a New York Times article in which the journalist has an email exchange with her and she says about writing "we’re talking about the struggle to drag a thought over from the mush of the unconscious into some kind of grammar, syntax, human sense; every attempt means starting over with language. starting over with accuracy. i mean, every thought starts over, so every expression of a thought has to do the same. every accuracy has to be invented. . . . i feel i am blundering in concepts too fine for me"

-Clem

I discovered Anne Carson because The White Review published this brilliant interview with her https://www.thewhitereview.org/feature/interview-anne-carson/ one week later I found 'A Biography of Red' at Shakespeare and Co and curled up to read the entire thing in a corner of the bookshop. She creates beautiful organic sculptures with her hands, inspired by the abundance of nature that surrounds her at her beautiful studio in Teia, just outside Barcelona. Earlier this month we visited her here, just in time to see all the trees start to bloom, surrounded by rolling farmlands and a view of the sea where Berta took us through a few of her favourite books. The one that spoke to us the most and that we have chosen to send to you all this month is by the Japanese art critic and philosopher Yanagi Sōetsu. It is a book that explores the beauty of functional objects and the importance of tradition and work created without ownership and ego. This month, by blending the work of Berta and the writings of Yanagi, we hope we can remind each other of the importance in reconnecting with ourselves through our sense of touch, the creative potential we can realise when we display patience, and the power of repetition: “It is that repetition that frees my hands from thought. And that freedom is the mother of all creation.” Details to sign up for this months package are now on our website, not one to miss out on, it will be full of postcards, interviews, and a little springtime surprise. ❤️

Sendb00ks May 2021 (Archive).

Stephanie LaCava chose Violette Leduc's Thérèse And Isabelle. The walls of white rooms were hung with green tapestries, spirals. A big window on the outside was filled with green trees. Weavings, pulled downwards, extended the thread. Marie approached me to tell me that she had been following Sendb00ks for a while and, excitedly, we started to talk about the books that inspire her.

A student of Central Saint Martins in London, where she learned to weave, Marie bought her first loom after launching a crowd-funding campaign. She explains in an interview with Sotheby’s that weaving is an intense manual work that requires hours of concentration—it is a quasi-mediative art sometimes weaving the words of writers like Duras, Barthes, Chantal Akerman, Etel Adnan, and Bouvier into her spirals. She is passionate about artists like Louise Bourgeois and Marina Abramovic, listening to the radio or podcasts while weaving. Marie describes her practice as a necessary process of storytelling. Or, in her own words, “I weave the invisible threads of an intimate story that does not know how to say otherwise.”

Marie is now working on an upcoming exhibition in NYC, opening on the first of June, which will be about her travel throughout Mexico and Brazil. Entitled L’air sous mes pieds, “it is the idea of lightness, movement, air, changes.”

It is the day before I return to Mexico, and at the airport, we start to talk about making a sleeve in time for her NYC exhibition. Marie suggests The Lover, by Marguerite Duras. A mesmerising semi-autobiographical novel that won the Prix Goncourt.
