One of the most famous authors of the Twentieth Century, Huxley is most famous for his groundbreaking novel Brave New World, however he wrote extensively throughout his life publishing over fifty works of fiction and nonfiction. This collection of essays meditates on many subjects, darting from topic to topic with his incredible wit and learning. It includes his now famous Introduction to the letters of D.H. Lawrence.  He was born in Surrey, England but moved to the US during his twenties where he would live for the rest of his life. It was here that he deepened his interest in Buddhism and mysticism, becoming a pacifist and a vegetarian, adopting the ancient Indian principle of nonviolence to all living beings. Towards the end of the thirties Huxley was making around $50,000 a week as a screenwriter in Hollywood. He used much of the money from this time aiding in the freeing and transportation of Jewish refugees from Hitler’s Germany to the US. He was outspoken in his love for hallucinogenic drugs and while on his deathbed, unable to speak, he made a written request to his wife to inject him twice with LSD.
