Lawrence Durell moved to Cyprus with his daughter Sappho Jane in 1952 after his wife had been hospitalised and charting his time and settling down there for three years in Bitter Lemons. He chronicles his encounters, Cyprus’ peculiar social webs as well as the chaos and violence of the Cypriot Enosis movement.
Twenty years prior, Durell had worked collaboratively with Anais Nin and Henry Miller at the Villa Seurat in Paris with the aim to found their own literary movement, his friendship and mutually critical relationship with Miller lasted over 45 years.
