In a remote estate in England, a governess, looking after two orphaned children, begins to believe that the house is haunted, though it may be only a figment of her imagination. When the boy, Miles, is expelled from his boarding school for a reason he won't divulge, the governess fears he is keeping a sinister secret. Then, one day, his sister Flora leaves the house without permission and refuses to ever see to governess again. This increases the suspicions of the latter that the children have been communicating with the ghost.
