Life begins on the other side of despair.

Sartre's depiction of France during the Nazi occupation. The third in a series, a harrowing story of war and defeat. Particularly touching when written in such a sensitive way.

Sartre was one of the founders of existentialism and married to Simone de Beauvoir. Together, Sartre and de Beauvoir challenged the assumptions and expectations of their upbringings, which they considered bourgeois, in both lifestyle and thought.

Sartre was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1964 despite attempts to refuse it.
