Most famous for his groundbreaking book Ways of Seeing, Berger changed the way people outside of the art world thought about and engaged with art. The book and accompanying programme was famously non elitist and equal in its tone, perhaps owing to his own early career as a painter in London. He moved into writing reviews, essays and art criticism however this book, G, is a romance novel set in Europe during the late 19th century. Over half of the Booker Prize money that he won with this book was donated by Berger to the Black Panther party in Britain after it was revealed the sponsors wealth had been fed largely by Caribbean sugar exploitation and slave labour. He was a controversial figure for his Marxist political views and remained politically provocative until his death in 2017.
