Born in 1857 Joseph Conrad was a Polish-British writer regarded as one of the greatest novelists to write in the English language. He did not speak English fluently until his twenties, which he learnt from English shipmates working as a marine. Conrad's most famous work, The Heart of Darkness explores the sea, loneliness, and inner battles with good and evil, central themes in his work. The inspiration for this short story was seeing firsthand the horrors of colonial rule in the Congo while he worked on board a steamship into Africa which left a deep mark on Conrad.
This book contains a selection of six short stories, inspired by real events or conversations overheard in a bar.
"No man succeeds in everything he undertakes. In that sense we are all failures. The great point is not to fail in ordering and sustaining the effort of our life.
